In recent years, the local food industry has witnessed initiatives and movements to mainstream sustainability. However, finding a poultry, beef or pork processor is an unexpected challenge. Most facilities have moved away from processing or only process privately.
As multi-generational poultry and beef farmers and ranchers, we found ourselves in need of a facility for our own livestock to be processed. The closest USDA poultry facility was a 4 ½ hour drive one way. Having to make the trip to drop off the live birds and return after they had been processed and frozen, left little room for profit.
The idea of building our own facility quickly became a reality when we realized there was a need in the community. This need ended up stretching into 3 states. Many others needed access to good quality processing to direct market their poultry product.
We visited multiple brick and mortar facilities to come up with the best, most efficient plan possible. The most practical way for us to accomplish a solution for our needs was to build a Mobile Poultry Processing Unit. We would not have the cost associated with a building, and we could move it to the necessary locations.
It has been very rewarding watching the dream of a rough sketch on a piece of paper become a thriving business.
